One of my favorite parts of being a writer is how we all have our own personal favorite writers, and here are some I’d probably keep in writing collections. Some of these are on the shortlist for the Booker Prize and others, maybe you know better. It’s just a list, after all.
And, of course, a few of these aren’t written as reviews (I’m not kidding), but are rather a quick glimpse through a writer’s career.
10. Thomas Bernhard
The story of Thomas Bernhard is a story of a man who found himself at the heart of a revolution in which he was a leading figure. The revolutionary in this story was a man named Joseph Weydemeyer, who called himself “the leader of The German Revolution.” Weydemeyer was a German poet who had been a student at the university of Trier, where the revolutionaries had begun their fight against the Roman Catholic Church. During the early stages of the struggle, most of these men were still in their twenties. A group of them decided that they would join the revolutionaries and, while doing so, write a book about their adventures. Weydemeyer wrote what I’ve just listed and his book The Eternal Flame was just published in 1898. I’ll note that it’s about an old-fashioned war that was waged before the introduction of airplanes and was a result of a war between two religions and the religious beliefs and customs of the German people.
9. Karl Marx
Karl Marx was born in London, England in 1818 and studied there from 1842 to 1844. He graduated from the London School of Economics in 1846 and studied at the College of St. Gallen and St. Louis. Marx published a couple of works during this period of his career and went on to give up a career at St. Gallen and write an extended study of industrial theory that dealt with the capitalist system and the problems with it. The study ended up in Marx’s work Capital. He wrote his book on the origins of capitalism in 1859 and, with an early version of it published in 1849, was ready to write Socialism, but didn’t finish it until the fall of 1852.
