Criminal records in the UK are becoming more restrictive. The number of records that have been removed has soared in recent years, with almost 100 to be held, and that’s likely to increase.
That’s the result of two new developments announced by the Home Office this week.
First, the government is set to stop taking up cases where an offender has been convicted of a crime in England or Wales unless it is for a new offence, or for a life sentence, within a certain time frame, and has failed to apply for an appeal.
The move is intended to reduce backlogs of new prosecutions.
Second, the government is planning to move a number of offences – including trafficking – to the category of ‘offenders who have not been convicted of any crime’.
While the category is meant to include offenders for whom ‘new evidence exists’ (as was the case for a number of trafficking offences for which the government decided to exclude a conviction), the government claims it could be used to include all offenders who have not yet received a conviction for a crime.
The move, if applied to all offences, could cut down on the backlog of new prosecutions.
