PURPOSE:

The purpose of this study was to estimate the number of U.S. veterans of the Vietnam War who served in Korea, Vietnam, and the Korean War using a population-attributable mortality measure.

METHODS:

A multistage probability cluster sampling approach was used in a large-scale survey of Korean American veteran populations in Chicago, Illinois. From the 2000 Current Population Survey (CPS), more than 1,000 American-born Korean-American men aged 18 to 90 were interviewed for each of four waves. A total of 5,800 deaths were identified; of these, 2,400 were due to the Korean War, 1,400 to the Vietnam War, and 900 to the Korean War-related deaths. The estimates of number of Korean War and related deaths were derived by multiplying the reported age-adjusted rates of deaths in these three populations by the probability estimate of veterans of each of each of these four wars. The results were based on a sample of 3,500 men, with a mean age of 41 years.

RESULTS:

Of those estimated in Korea, 5,600 died of Vietnam or of either North or South Korean military action. The annual average rate of North Korean military action was 3.4 deaths per 100,000 troops over an 8-year period starting
