Nope, not even close. Here’s the real one.
He’s not from Victorious, then, so you may not have heard of him. He’s just an old school wrestler who used to be a bodyguard for the “Mighty” John Cena.
Now he’s trying to make it into the UFC as an opponent for Brock Lesnar this Saturday at UFC Fight Night: Katsuya vs. Miesha, but that wasn’t easy. He didn’t have much of a wrestling background.
“It was hard work, a few setbacks here and there, but the whole time I thought that I could make it,” Rex Gudas told me when I interviewed him for Inside the Red Line. “I had this thought that even if my opponent is a bad wrestler, I could still beat him with the way I work. I was just a little more mature.”
So his first loss as a pro came for a reason. Now in his mid-30s, Gudas has been competing in MMA for a decade, working pro wrestlers and jiu-jitsu practitioners to get his cardio and cardio efficiency up.
To this day, he trains hard.
“I do whatever it takes,” says Gudas. “I train four times a week, five times a week, seven times a week. Even if I have a few days free, I go train.”
If UFC Fight Night: Katsuya vs. Miesha was any indication, Rex Gudas has a long road ahead of him.
“It’s always a struggle, because you don’t know when you’ve lost a fight,” he says. “I’m still growing with this fight, so I’ve only fought in Japan and Europe at this point. But I feel like it’s very likely that I’ll fight in the UFC again. I’m getting close to 40 and it’s a big accomplishment. I haven’t gone deep in the UFC yet. But it would take a lot of work to beat me.”
Of course, the hard work has paid off for the most part. Gudas is 6-0 in the UFC and has a 1-1 pro record. He started this season of TUF with a first-round submission victory over Ryan Janes.
The rest of the TUF house, from fellow UFC veteran and TUF house champion Brandon Moreno to newcomer Yancy Medeiros, can hardly complain.
