“You have three instruments and each of them have their own qualities – it’s about finding the middle ground on both sides. If you play piano or guitar, you can get stuck because you are too heavy, too soft, too fast or too slow, it doesn’t matter. When all is said and done, I think piano is the closest to guitar, when all is said and done. You have the perfect balance.”
What’s changed since you started playing?
“First of all, this new tour is a challenge, and I can’t imagine a more difficult one. I play at different tempos and in different places; I have to stay in tune and have it all go perfectly, you can’t make mistakes. Also, I’m using more pedals than I ever have because of course I want to stay in tune and keep my playing good. As I get older, I’ve tried different pedals, and I always come back to the MXR M800!
“I played piano in my early 20s, before I got too old. When I do this tour I will find a new instrument that will allow me to play. I had something like the Roland Juno-60 for a few years, which was fun, but it also lacked certain features like a reverb. After finding the M800, it has given me the opportunity to play more and play at different tempos and places. I’m still learning, and it’s a challenge to me, but I feel I have a new beginning and are getting better. There’s more to come, but I’m enjoying it.”
How did you become an instrument collector?
“Once I got interested, I found all kinds of great items, guitars, pedals. After a few years, I was able to start selling some of my personal collection. For this tour, I found a Yamaha CS50 and a Yamaha PX8 and a Roland Jupiter-6 and a Roland Jupiter-5, but I am very happy not to have had any of those in the last 2 or 3 years. We will see how things shape up on the next tour.
“My next purchase will be a new Roland Juno-6 with a great speaker – I will play it all night!”
