It’s a different kind of instrument. It takes you to a different world.
When did my first ukulele start? I was 5 or 6 years old. I have many siblings. This is an area where I was most likely born with a gift. When I played, my parents thought I was crazy. I didn’t think of myself as an instrument and I didn’t think of ukulele as something I could become attached to.
I had a dad who played ukulele and a brother who didn’t play ukulele. They would teach me to do the ukulele shuffle, but they never put me in lessons. So my parents decided the best thing I could do for myself would be to have a ukulele that I could play on my own. As my dad’s ukulele would not cut out of a pack, I was determined for one year to learn the ukulele shuffle. This year I have completed the ukulele shuffle.
I would like to make it very clear that what I am describing is not an experience that I had with my first kazoo or with ukulele. In the few months I had played it was much less and less, even though I had started out the way I wanted it to be. I was not as focused and had less motivation. In addition, I was playing it slowly and slowly. I was getting bored with it and frustrated with trying to do the whole thing. I realized I was wasting my life playing uke. So I started playing the melody on a ukulele.
My favorite ukulele is a Taylor Guitars “T-440” I love the smoothness of the notes as I go up. It’s the kind of ukulele that you could play slowly, like a classical ukulele or something, and then you play it fast, or in rhythm. I also like the “soul” of the ukulele, the sound that is so distinctive to the ukulele genre. It is a type of ukulele that I want to play and keep playing for a very long time. I love the way they play it.
What are some reasons why you might like ukulele? I think it depends on the type of person you are. If you think it’s not for you, then I don’t think ukulele is for you.
