If you want an ukulele that’s lightweight, with a nice, solid tone, you should go with an 8-string acoustic. I like to wear my ukulele around the house on the way to work at the office or any time I’m traveling (e.g., on a plane). I prefer 8-strings because I find them to have more “oomph” on a good set of high strings, and they’re less likely to come loose when moving. For example, let’s say you play a low F. You could always go back to the F, but I prefer to have that F on high strings. (To be honest, I probably can use all 8 strings when I’m traveling. I’m just playing a lot of songs now!). On the other hand, if you’re planning on traveling with your ukulele, you probably want one that’s slightly more “mids” or “upper mids” than normal. So, if your ukulele’s tuning is D, you can still go ahead and get an F with the 8 string set. If it’s a T or R, it might come in handy to have more than one fret on either side.
Do we always want 10?
Well, it depends on how much you like different notes. If you’re mostly into low E#s and A-minor, you want to get a 10. If you dig a lot of A-minor you should get a 9. But it all depends on you.
What kind of tone can we get with an 8-string ukulele?
If you like a good bassline, you’ll probably want the 8-string ukulele. If you’re trying to work at the studio, then it might be a little too much for some people, but on the other hand, if you’re the type of person who prefers to play in the lower registers, then maybe the 8-string ukulele might suit you, too.
What kind of sound do you need to achieve my goals?
There are tons of options out there in this market, so I’m not going to try to go into depth here. Basically, you have to do what makes sense for you.
Do I really need to build this guitar myself?
No. I was fortunate enough to have built my own one, and I loved it. A lot of musicians also build their own guitars.
