Practice scales is something I would have told him when we first started working together, but after I realized this was a skill that only a native could have (and it might be a skill that we need to keep getting better at). I was already a bit intimidated, and now that I am just having to go out there and do it, I can’t help but feel a little stupid. And then, just when I’m trying to figure out whether or not I should be playing an off-beat technique or if this isn’t something he’s interested in or want to try, he walks up to me, grabs the back of my neck and just starts trying to do ukulele scales right there, the same way that he’ll do anything and anything with his hands, he even started playing a few different chords, and so I knew for sure that this was definitely something he wanted to do!
What kind of music do you play?
I have a piano and a piano player that I regularly play with and he is actually a friend of mine. He taught me how to play and how a piano is really a great tool for improvisation. He also taught me to play jazz and even some rock songs. He gave me a lot and helped me to see what I liked and was having issues with and what I can do to improve. He also told me about the other people who go to their local musicians’ studios which is basically the same as a recording studio. In here, there are two floors and a lot of big walls of instruments, and we’re all playing to very loud loud audiences. I am not sure if I have really been exposed to it properly enough to say what I am passionate about, but I do enjoy all the different genres of music and different styles of music, like jazz and electronic music. I was also one of the first fans of the band The Black Keys, and I’m really fond of them these days.
How would you describe your own music?
I usually go way over that when I talk to myself or when I think aloud. I like to make it short and simple, and I like to make music, and so when I say a lot of words my mind is way overthinking things. My writing is really messy and sometimes pretty incoherent. When I write, I have to put it all together together so that I can keep track of it all as I am typing it down. It usually starts like this: “I’ve been writing about how
