I guess you’ve got more to do than just be a good singer. You have to learn how to dance in tune. Learn the step count in advance and put the rest of your concentration into it, and only then would you be able to sing the melody in unison and sing along with the instrument.
What do you do on stage to prepare for this challenge?
I work out to 60 minutes a day and drink five to six glasses of water. I spend a lot of time in the gym, lifting weights, trying to get stronger. Then I’ll practice the songs in my head. There are a few videos available online where you can see me trying to sing all the time.
I remember when I was a kid, I saw a YouTube video of a female pianist singing a song from Mozart’s Suite in A major. I watched it a couple of times. I was so amazed there was a woman on stage on an instrument that had been all too commonly referred to as “girl-band instrument” over the years. She was able to produce an incredibly strong and complex voice. She took a lot of work. There were no video clips to go along with her.
In the past few years, there’s been a great deal of interest in female instrumentalists, but a lack of awareness and education about how they perform. Do you think there are still barriers to female involvement in music who would like to share their story?
I think there really is a lot of ignorance about what a woman can do on the piano, and it’s not necessarily that I’m advocating that women should drop out of piano. It’s just that there aren’t a lot of women who want to learn how to be good at it, and even less who have all the information they need to be really great. My biggest thing is to help people learn the information.
There are many women who do not want to be at the piano for the sake of it, but there are also men who have the desire to become great at it. I tell people to work as hard as they can. If you’re a really good piano player, then, in a sense, you’re a better pianist. That will just benefit you in your day-to-day life.
I want people to think about what they want out of a piano and what they want to gain. I know that a lot of people would rather spend their time on a computer or doing something that’s less visually pleasing
