A key is a single (or a pair) of elements used for encryption, and is used for:

Encryption of a message: the key can be encoded with any number of components, and the ciphertext can be “seeded” from the encrypted content with a key. For an example of a well known key, see the AES and key-rotation attacks, see the AES and RC4.

Authentication of a message: the key can be encoded with any number of components, and the ciphertext can be “seeded” from the encrypted content with a key, or other authentication information. For an example of a well known key, see the AES and RC4.

What does “non-standard” mean for a key?

Any key that is not cryptographically secure (enciphered), and that is not an “AES-128-CBC” public key, is called a “non-standard” key. A “non-standard” key cannot be used by AES-128, RC4, or any other method of symmetric encryption (such as RSA). It does not need to be “standard”, however, it is possible to use a “non-standard” key with AES-128, RC4, RSA, and the other symmetric encryption methods such as CBC or ECDH.

What is public key encryption?

What does encryption “look like”?

In a “standard” Ciphertext/Encryption pair (CIP), the key and ciphertext are the same (i.e. identical) and there is only one encryption ciphertext. This is usually done by using “AES-256” or “AES-256-CTR-CBC”:

CIP1 = “C*D
