The U.S.-led coalition against ISIS is targeting Syrian government forces in an aerial offensive that could end the terror group’s five-year siege of the eastern Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor and its air base there, Pentagon officials said Monday.
The Syrian Defense Ministry said Sunday that government forces had suffered heavy losses in the battle for one of its two air bases just northwest of the city.
The air offensive began in earnest late last week and involved the U.S.-led coalition’s main partner in the campaign against ISIS, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), said the U.S. military’s Central Command. The Syrian military, which has been fighting alongside the SDF against ISIS since 2014, called for the coalition’s strikes to end Sunday.
“All aircraft now are operating within range of Deir ez-Zor city while conducting targeted strikes to protect SDF forces and forces in area,” a statement posted on the coalition’s website read.
The SDF is a coalition of Kurdish and Arab fighters, who began battling ISIS in September 2015.
