It varies, but it is generally $5–10 per hour.
Note: For most of the past two years, we have been consistently writing that these rates do not exist, because companies don’t provide any numbers. We believe that this misinformation has created an imbalance between the prices charged (on freelance sites) and the actual costs of doing freelance editing on a company-owned site.
Is this real? What companies charge exactly?
Several companies are currently posting rates as low as $5 per edit. These rates only appear to be for “freelancers only,” but for one job on an editorial website, they are equivalent to the “freelancer” rate. One such site is Gizmodo, which states on their website that their editorial staff “are freelance editors. We only employ freelance editors.” A few days ago, we found a pricing link to an Amazon-promoted rate (which is different for both the “freelancer” and for freelance editors) at $7 per edit, which is about half the rate listed on the other site, for “all-purpose editorial work.”
Many companies (including sites like WordFence, where the editorial staff is not paid) offer a “freelancer” rate (usually around $5 per edit, and more flexible than the “editorial” rate) that is significantly higher than the hourly rates listed above.
Another company, Dribbble, offers a discount for freelance editors. The company states on their website that “our freelance editors get paid in advance.”
And a third company, Scribd, has a fee similar to Dribbble’s, and makes the rates on their free website appear higher than the rates on their paid site. They also state on their site that we are paying “one way” by a company-created discount.
How can I determine how many hours of work I need?
This is the biggest challenge. For those who need to work at a pace comparable to editorial staff, we recommend
