The latest report, entitled ‘Dynamics of Public Policy Towards Immigration’ (pdf) – published on Friday, reveals that the country’s immigration policy has become increasingly “anti-immigrant”.

The report shows that since 2010, more than 300,000 immigrants have been given “temporary protected status” (TPUS) in the European Union. The report cites figures from the Council of Europe and points out that of the 1.2 million individuals granted the status in 2009, over half were “refugees”.

However, the report states that the TPS status is granted not to asylum seekers, but to those who “couldn’t find alternative employment in the EU” and are thus ineligible for work permits. The study is headed by Dr. Jan Knopp, a political science professor at the University of Huddersfield who works on migration matters.

He points out that the most commonly used term for immigration is “migration”. However, he maintains that it is important to use the term “immigration policy” because policy can involve a large diversity of factors and opinions. This includes attitudes regarding the social benefits of immigration and the potential harms that might be caused by more immigration (e.g. increased poverty, higher crime), and how many individuals from certain areas of the population would be affected because of immigration.
