The main inspiration for this piece was a few songs from the TV series and some of his novels. For instance in “My First Kiss” he sings “But this love is like wine/My first kiss is like a bottle of wine”. Gatsby’s favorite drink is red, so it was the ideal red wine theme for this piece.
The final illustration I created, which is featured in the piece, also bears a strong resemblance to “Gatsby”‘s favorite book: A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.
In this case the theme didn’t look quite as elegant as the actual artwork, but my intent was to create a more sophisticated piece. This was done by using a mix of digital painting and oil painting. The digital painting technique lets me give the piece a more realistic and realistic look with the lighting and shadows. I also used a slightly more organic style and added some shading to give it more texture, so I think the final piece looks quite pretty.
As you can see, I used only digital software to create the illustrations, with no oil paints. In fact, if you want to learn how to create a digital painting yourself, this website is a good starting place.

I had many different techniques used to create the illustrations, for instance choosing a dark blue-green palette for the background that gives it the look of old leather, the orange-orange palette, and even mixed white-blue-grey that looks very cool.
