Maine Fish and Game officials are keeping a close eye on a Maine-made firearm that was found in the woods near Portland, Maine.

Wildlife officials are asking the public not to shoot the gun, which authorities say was made in China and then shipped to Massachusetts.

Wildlife crews were alerted to the discovery of the semi-automatic rifle on Monday in a woods on Houlton Road near Salem.

The weapon was found in an area of the woods that hunters have used for decades, according to law enforcement.

Officials said that the gun was about 1.7 inches long and could fire 12 rounds at a time.

Wildlife officials are recommending that hunters not touch the rifle, but to call state police.


Dangerous drugs, including crack cocaine, methamphetamine, and hallucinogenic mushrooms, were found more frequently in the blood of teens who have died after taking Ecstasy than those who had not taken the drugs, according to research from the University of Oxford that found more deaths were connected to the drugs among teens who had already taken them than in other age groups. The study is published in JAMA Internal Medicine.

“The effects of MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) are highly variable and depend on individual response,” said Professor Peter Wright, lead author of a paper published in JAMA Internal Medicine. He and colleagues reviewed medical records from 897 Ecstasy users who died, of whom 587 were 15 or younger, between September 2005 and November 2008. At two doses of MDMA — two micrograms per kilogram of body mass adjusted for body weight — more than a third (73.8 percent) of deaths were in people who took the drug at least once in their lifetime;
